Development Guidelines


Student Information System
SIS Development Strategy for 2006-07 and 2007-08

The SIS implementation was completed in December 2004. Following the implementation, efforts were focused on completing data conversions, archiving/purging records, refining the setup, and fine tuning business processes. During the past year specific enhancements were developed to improve operational efficiencies, address state and federal compliance issues, and shore up the reporting environment. The complete list of projects developed in 2006 can be found in Appendix A.

IU has also started the initiative to upgrade the SIS software from our current version 8.0 to version 8.9/9.0. To take advantage of the new features and improvements, significant resources will be required to implement the new software, develop training, and update end user documentation. The upgrade project commenced in August, 2006 and will continue through February 2008. Because a large number of business analyst and technical resources will be dedicated to the upgrade project, development work and/or enhancements to the current 8.0 release will be limited during 2007 and part of 2008. The enhancements planned for the December 2nd are listed in Appendix B.

While work progresses on the upgrade initiative, IU will continue to work on and support the following efforts:

  1. IU will complete all software maintenance and compliance related projects. Some of these projects include required and emergency maintenance for all modules, changes to financial aid regulations and compliance requirements, and changes to the 1098T form.
  2. IU will focus its new development activities on selected strategic initiatives. Some of the projects under discussion include:
    1. There are a number of workflow initiatives underway in the Registrar/Records area including student-initiated drop/add, grade changes, transcript and enrollment verification requests, intercampus transfers, changes of major, residency appeals. Faculty and staff will be able to request schedule of classes updates, rooms, course credit loads, and administrative registrations. The full list of proposed projects may be found in Appendix C.
    2. Projects for financial aid and admissions which combine workflow with document imaging are also underway at the campus level.
    3. Other projects include the design and testing of the room management system, Ad Astra, which is being re-tooled by the vendor.
  3. Ongoing periodic work requests for IUIE data group and report development will be assessed and considered on a case-by-case basis.
